Cavanaugh: Built by Open Mike Eagle & Serengeti

A few months back when I spoke to Open Mike Eagle he mentioned how Serengeti was one of his favorite rappers. He didn’t really elaborate on their relationship so I assumed it ended at fandom. I’m happy to have been wrong, this collaboration is honestly a dream. Mike and Dave’s flows are like a two toned jacket, weaving together seamlessly but simultaneously holding on to their unique qualities.

When Mike first mentioned Serengeti, that name was unknown to me. I had to go back and dig into his discography, which unearthed a gang of records that were so progressive sonically and conceptually, it was clear why Mike loved his art.

A nice surprise blessing present in this record is Mike’s choice to produce the track. I don’t think I’ve heard a beat from him before, or if I have, I wasn’t aware of it. That being said it’s really well done, there’s a really neat pulse present in the synth, complimented by an echoing snare. The icing of course is the emcees’ heavy soaked flows that seep into the beat with ease.

Mike and Dave are not only prolific rappers but also astoundingly creative minds. They’ve reached a point in their careers where unique concepts for records come without much effort. That coupled with how cohesive both artist’s previous projects have been, I can only see good things coming from this collaboration.
