Exclusive: Desmond Chiam Talks ‘Falcon and The Winter Soldier’ [Video]

by Julian Cannon April 10, 2021
written by Julian Cannon

Falcon and The Winter Soldier is halfway though its first season. With John Walker and the Flag Smashers being the main antagonists for season one, fans around the world are wondering how the six episode mini-series will conclude in the coming weeks before the premiere of Loki in a few more months.

The ongoing pandemic left Marvel fans hungry for any MCU content in 2020 due to the fact that several planned releases got delayed until 2021 and 2022. However, our first offering from the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2021 was WandaVision. Falcon and The Winter Soldier followed next.

One of the Flag Smashers on the series is named Dovich and Desmond Chiam plays as him. Dovich is a pivotal member of the Flag Smashers as the group draws similar inspirations from the comic book counterparts of the same name.

In this exclusive interview, Desmond Chiam talks about the role and how he reacted when he joined the cast. Desmond also goes over being on the set at the back half of Falcon and The Winter Soldier during the pandemic and how some things changed in the process. And finally, Desmond Chiam brings up his love for the Marvel comics and some of his favorite Captain America stories.

Exclusive: Little Marvin and Cast Talk ‘THEM’ [Video]

by Jonathan Tolliver April 9, 2021
written by Jonathan Tolliver

Real life is scary. We’re harassed, harangued, maligned, imitated and infiltrated. Time and again we flip those feelings into art, and the world marvels at our resilience in the face of THEIR oppression. Ain’t that something?

—–

With that in mind, Amazon’s ‘THEM’ arrives today with lofty expectations. It’s a chilling, slow-burning Horror with a capital H about a family that integrates a white Compton enclave. It’s co-produced by Little Marvin and Lena Waithe, and comes in the wake of other beloved prestige Black-helmed thrillers on streaming services.

What sets this show apart is the Wilhelm scream beneath the surface. There’s an all-encompassing unease, a dread they’re able to capture through breathtaking cinematography and taut performances from this stellar cast.

Shahadi Wright Joseph is particularly strong as Ruby Emory, the older of two daughters, whose wry, expressive face and full commitment to the moment lifts every scene she’s in.

Shahadi Wright Joseph

‘It can be like you as an actor are taking the stress from your character, which is not fair to you, you know? It’s not fair!,’ said Joseph.

Deborah Ayorinde is phenomenal as the matriarch, a woman teetering on the edge while desperate to protect her family from both the insidious and plainly-seen terrors of her new neighborhood.

‘The way all these neighborhoods are kind of setup is not by accident, and I hope that people see that and it starts a much-needed conversation,’ said Ayorinde.

I talked with the cast about growing up Black, living in the moment and the state of Black TV.

Them premieres on Amazon on April 9.

Exclusive: Kendall Kyndall Talks Hosting ALLBLK’s ‘Social Society’ [Video]

by Katherine Tinsley April 9, 2021
written by Katherine Tinsley

Newly rebranded platform ALLBLK launches talk show with social media star Kendall Kyndall. Social Society hosted by Kendall Kyndall seeks to offer a fresh perspective and face for providing social news and trending topics all while incorporating stand up comedy.

The show will explore topics that are significant to the Black community such as entrepreneurship, politics, financial literacy, and relationships all while blending together factual information and comedy. The show will have a rotation of co-hosts to help deliver the weekly commentary.

Kendall Kyndall built his social media presence online through providing hilarious commentary on the popular reality tv franchise Love and Hip Hop and later becoming a host of the Love & Hip Hop Secrets Unlocked special and as a backstage host for reunion episodes.

For the host there is a level of pride and excitement to be the host of the first talk show for the network, and to be a part of something that is unapologetically Black. The show following the network’s vision gives Kendall the opportunity to be unapologetically himself without a filter.

The ALLBLK General Manager Brett Dismuke said the following about 2021 and the platform:

“2021 will be a big year for ALLBLK…As we continue to elevate our content offerings, we’re excited to present our take on the variety talk show format with Social Society – a fresh concept that merges the best elements of sketch comedy shows like In Living Color, and news commentary programming like Last Week Tonight. As audiences tune-in from week to week, Social Society will stand out as a premiere destination for staying up to date on what’s happening in Black culture.”

Executive producers Sheena Carter and Latisha Fortune they said the following about the platform:

“joining the ALLBLK family is an opportunity for us to impact Black culture and bring a fresh and positive perspective to social content. It’s extremely important for us to have a platform where we can empower people, share new perspectives, and continue exploring important issues that affect our community every day. With Social Society, we are creating that platform.”

ALLBLK is unapologetically Black and the platform is creating content aligned with this vision to be proudly Black and Social Society is an extension of that. Check out our exclusive interview with Kendall above.

Exclusive: Lex Scott Davis Discusses Starring in New ABC Series ‘Rebel’ [Video]

by Katherine Tinsley April 8, 2021
written by Katherine Tinsley

Lex Scott Davis stars as Cassidy in the new abc legal drama Rebel.

The legal show is loosely based on the life of executive producer Erin Brockovich. Annie “Rebel” Bello (played by Katey Sagal) is a legal advocate with a twist: she doesn’t have a law degree. Rebel has several children from different marriages creating one large blended family that navigates her fearless spirit together. The unit goes through the challenges of life and having a matriarch committed to changing the world.

Lex Scott Davis plays lawyer Cassidy, one of Rebel’s daughters, on the show. Davis describes Cassidy as vibrant and passionate. Rebel is the actress’s first starring role for primetime television. Her introduction to the art of acting began with her love of dance and local acting classes she took in her hometown of Baltimore, Maryland. The city of Baltimore is where she was introduced to performing beginning dance at the age of three and taking acting classes at the arena playhouse. After studying dance in Philadelphia she transitioned into pursuing acting full time which later led to her first television role as Toni Braxton in the Lifetime film “Unbreak my Heart.”

With the show being loosely based on Erin Brockovich, it will inspire audiences to advocate for change regardless of their credentials. Davis was surprised to learn that Erin wasn’t a real lawyer, but was still able to create an impact within the legal profession. Erin Brockovich’s life story and the new series loosely based on her life Rebel will show that curiosity and the desire for change are the only thing needed to create a lasting impact on the world.

Rebel premieres April 8 on ABC at 10 PM Eastern.

Exclusive: Cast Talks Starring In HBO’s New Show ‘The Nevers’ [Video]

by Kinsey Schofield April 7, 2021
written by Kinsey Schofield

Ben Chaplin, Anna Devlin, Vinnie Heaven, Amy Manson, Zackary Momoh, Rochelle Neil, Denis O’Hare, Viola Prettejohn, and Kiran Sonia Sawar talk HBO’s The Nevers.

The cast reads more like the list of a Vanity Fair after-party. The Nevers is a Victorian-era sci-fi thriller that stars such an incredible ensemble that we can’t fit them all in the headline – ps. that’s not even half of them! There’s also Laura Donnelly (who is totally badass as Amalia True), James Norton, and Pip Torrens to name a few!

The Knockturnal‘s Kinsey Schofield asked Anna Devlin, Vinnie Heaven, Amy Manson, Zackary Momoh, Rochelle Neil, and Viola Prettejohn about the audition and casting process of such a high-profile project. “I didn’t get a script for ages,” explains Rochelle Neil. “It was HBO so it was very very hush-hush. There was like a link and everything was James Bond style… your laptop would self-destruct if you tried to do anything other than just read the link. Then I read like, an epic scene. It was really long. Like five wordy epic pages.” She put her audition on tape before being called to meet with Joss Whedon.

“I remember coming out of the audition, the final audition, thinking that I just messed it all up!” says Anna Devlin. “Before going in that room, I didn’t know Primrose was a giant! And just before I was about to start my performance, I was told, ‘By the way, you’re playing a giant!'”

After being cast, poor Viola Prettejohn got so swept up in the moment that she forgot to call her Mom! Watch the hilarious story in the video above.

HBO’s original series The Nevers premieres on April 11, 2021. Season one part two will follow at a later date.

Kinsey Schofield is a contributor to The Knockturnal and you can follow her on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook.

Exclusive: Stars Lily-Rose Depp, Tye Sheridan, Fionn Whitehead & Director Neil Burger Talk New Sci-Fi Thriller [Video]

by Nastacia Nickolaou April 6, 2021
written by Nastacia Nickolaou

VOYAGERS, starring Colin Ferrell, Tye Sheridan (Ready Player One) Lily-Rose Depp (The King) and Fionn Whitehead (Dunkirk) is a sci-fi thriller where the future of the human race is in danger as a group of scientifically-engineered men and women launch into outer space to colonize a new inhabitable planet. Once they realize their desires and emotions are being suppressed by a blue liquid they’re ordered to take daily, they stop following orders and begin to explore their most primal instincts. They quickly learn what it means to feel pleasure and pain as the ship endures chaos. VOYAGERS is the epitome of what it means to be human as they’re consumed by love, lust, hunger for power and fear. Written and directed by, Neil Burger, (The Divergent series, Limitless, The Illutionist) VOYAGERS could be the next sci-fi obsession.

Much of the film takes place on the ship, transcending time and space. Burger talks about the challenges of creating a film in such tight quarters saying that film is really about human nature. Although the talent was exceptional, training the young cast to be extremely still with so much energy became the real challenge.

“I had 30 actors who were 20 years old. They were suppose to be very docile… so to bring all of their nervous energy down and young energy down was the challenge as a director.”

Not to mention, there were no windows so light wouldn’t appear on-screen because space is obviously dark. I asked about using green screen with some of the technical bits in the film but to my surprise, the set was a NASA design for deep space travel and used throughout the majority of the film.

“The spaceship is pretty much based in reality… There’s no windows. There’s nothing to see… There’s no light. There’s just blackness out there so it’s all very internal and all claustrophobic in a way which just heightens the suspense.”

Fionn Whitehead, who ultimately ends up being the antagonist of the film, speaks on the set’s environment saying that the white walls were sterile and cold. He said that the set’s closed off nature created a real sense of claustrophobia leading each character to have intense reactions once they’re no longer taking the “blue.” His character, Zac, ends up in disagreements which led to fights on the ship. I asked if he had to learn how to do fight sequences for the film but he said Burger was adamant they learn how to “not fight.”

“We had 2 weeks for preparation but one of the things they were really keen on were making sure we didn’t seem like we knew how to fight at all. They wanted to strip it back and seem kind of animalistic almost like chimp like in the way that we fought like there was a lot of open palm stuff and if you made a fist, you couldn’t punch you had to beat.”

There are many nuances throughout the film that leaves audiences realizing how different life in space would be and how normal every day commodities are more of a luxury than we may consider. VOYAGERS uncovers truths about what it would mean to save future generations and shows us that everything is not as it may seem.

VOYAGERS is distributed by Lionsgate and will be released on April 9th, 2021.

Experiential Supply is an award-winning company to which the Hollywood film industry trusts to design large-scale, immersive experiences for films such as IT: Chapter 2, Ready Player One, The LEGO Movie, Smallfoot, and more.

“The drive-throughs have been a lot of fun and were necessary last year during the holidays,” says Experiential Supply CEO Jasen Smith. “Now, we feel it is time to welcome families into our world on foot to take in the rich, immersive environments we are building. The vast walking path we are creating naturally makes for a safe, distanced, and intimate experience. There are magical things to see and interact with. Exclusive: Cynthy Wu & Shantel VanSanten Talk ‘For All Mankind’ [Video]

by Kinsey Schofield April 3, 2021
written by Kinsey Schofield

Houston, we have a teenager.

While For All Mankind season one explores an alternative version of the 1969 space race to the moon, we’re now caught up on season two; which features an aspirational NASA environment in the 1980s. The Apple+ show goes beyond the spacesuit and freeze-dried fare and travels home with the astronauts and engineers, highlighting their family dynamics.

The Knockturnal‘s Kinsey Schofield spoke to For All Mankind’s Cynthy Wu and Shantel VanSanten about their current mother-daughter storyline. You will recognize VanSaten from season one, her character, Karen Baldwin, loses her son at the end of season one while her husband Edward is on a mission. Wu, new to season two, plays their adopted teenage daughter named Kelly who is curious about her parents’ past. In season two episode six, we find Kelly feeling inquisitive and insecure as she navigates her teens… while Karen nervously has to forge through being the mother of a vulnerable teenage girl.

It’s not all temper tantrums and teenage angst though. VanSanten and Wu cheerfully explain some of the key elements and behind-the-scenes executions that go into creating a television show. Before filming began on For All Mankind season two, Wu showed up on set to shoot photos that could be displayed throughout her family’s on-set home. Then VanSanten jumps in to explain that the first time she met her on-screen husband, they took lively family Christmas photos. Though they might feel bizarre, these tiny elements make the show appear so sincere and special. For All Mankind’s Cynthy Wu and Shantel VanSanten explain in the video above.

Catch brand new episodes of For All Mankind every Friday on Apple+.

Exclusive: Comedian Nasim Pedrad Talks New TBS Show ‘Chad’ [Video]

by Kinsey Schofield April 3, 2021
written by Kinsey Schofield

If Justin Bieber had a 14-year-old Persian BFF, it would totally be Chad. But wait… having never seen Justin and Chad in the same room… I can not confirm whether or not they are the same person.

Chad is the brainchild of 39-year-old comedian Nasim Pedrad. Pedrad plays the title character… effortlessly. Chad is starting his freshman year of high school and has never been more desperate to hang out with the cool kids. The braces are off, the testosterone can’t be tamed… just like Miley Cyrus. Who… also… kind of resembles Chad. But why am I talking about Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus when there is only one pop-culture icon on Chad’s radar? Michael B. Jordan. To Chad, Michael B. Jordan is the epitome of success and swag and he never hesitates to remind whoever is in his company.

Described as “cringe-comedy,” Pedrad has spent the last five years bringing Chad to life… and she gets it if some of the scenes send you sinking into your sofa because for some, high school made you feel that way too, but ultimately Chad is a good human. He has a sweet heart. He is just blinded by his insecurity which sometimes affects the filter between his brain and mouth. “Niki, no offense… but you are a whore.” is one of my favorite scenes from the pilot episode. “I said no offense!” I spit my Coke Zero everywhere.

Tune into TBS this Tuesday, April 6th, for the series premiere of Nasim Pedrad as Chad. I think you will enjoy him as much as I do. 👍
