A weekend of drag queens and kings. Name a better weekend activity, we dare you.
Whenever I tell people I am going to Bushwig, they always give me a confused look saying “why are you going to Bushwick” to which I always have to enunciate the WIG part. Bushwig is this weekend festival full of music and drag performances. Started by the famous drag queen Horrorchata, Bushwig is the place that prides itself on being inclusive and giving unconditional love no matter who you are. Drag kings and queens from all around the world come together to put on some of the best drag numbers you will ever see. There were kicks, splits, dips, twirls, stunts, reveals, and much, much more.
Bushwig took place at The Knockdown Center in Brooklyn. The Knockdown Center is this big warehouse that hosts a bunch of concerts and shows. And what better place for a weekend drag festival to be than a warehouse in the middle of nowhere Brooklyn? The place was packed with over a thousand people, many of whom were dressed in their fun and creative drag looks.
Now, let’s talk about some of the drag performances Bushwig is the place for performers to go all out in their performance. Many of them left everything on the stage, including most of their clothes and their wigs. There were over 200 drag performers, all giving their all. There were a lot of high energy performances that really gave the crowd their lives. But, what so great about this festival is that it’s not always about performing the high energy number with all the stunts but it’s also about giving camp, comedy, and even emotion.
To call out a few of our favorites, we loved the Chutney Spears number where she did a performance to “I’m A Slave 4 U” by Britney Spears. Already a good song choice but what made this performance LEGENDARY was how she brought out a live snake!! We were GAGGED.
Another favorite of ours was the entire performance by “UK Takeover.” They had it all. Energy, choreography, comedy, EVERYTHING. Any performance dancing to Beyonce (shown below) is one for the records.
And what would Bushwig be without performances from some of the Drag Race girls. Aja performed two number during the Saturday night show. For her final set, she performed some songs from her EP “In My Feelings” and it was the first time she performed those songs live. Alaska Thunderfuck also performed a mashup of her songs to which the crowd lost it over. And who can forget Dida Ritz performing some Nicki Minaj and giving us high energy, high impact choreo, all while she has some of the longest braids I have ever seen (they hit the floor).
Sunday night was just as good with Shea Coulee performing some of her songs live. Lady Bunny also performed some campy numbers which proved why she is a comedy legend.
Bushwig 2018 was one of the best experiences we have had throughout 2018. It has going on for years now and it is not going to stop coming back. If you are someone interested in drag or even someone who is just into having fun and getting drunk while watching some killer performances, Bushwig is the place for you. Make sure you keep your eye out for next year’s Bushwig because every year it just gets better and better.
