Big Mood is Tubi’s newest series, coming all the way from the UK. Premieres on April 19th
The six-episode series follows best friends Maggie (Nicola Coughlan from Bridgerton and Derry Girls) and Eddie (Lydia West from It’s A Sin and Inside Man), who have been inseparable for a decade. They are a modern-day Thelma and Louise, but as they approach their 30s, they start to question their life choices and careers.
We learn early on that Maggie has bipolar disorder, and Eddie is not only her best friend but also her support system. Maggie is a playwright who only writes well when she’s off her lithium medication, which she has stopped taking without a doctor’s approval. This decision leads to a downward spiral as she starts looking for happiness in all the wrong places, including hooking up with her old high school teacher and planning a trip to Cambodia with a man she’s just met on Tinder 2 hours prior.
Eddie is a bartender at a bar that she co-owns with her brother. She not only has to fight to keep the bar open but also act as Maggie’s caretaker. As she tries to balance everything, she starts to question whether her friendship with Maggie benefits her or if it’s a one-way street.
This show is the first for writer Camila Whitehill, who said she did not intend for Maggie to have bipolar disorder for any specific reason. It’s a part of her character, and that’s all there is to it.
The six episodes were directed by Rebecca Asher, who used a specific lens to showcase the two moods of happiness and depression, which highlight the high and low points of the series.
The show will make you cry, laugh, and all in between. This show is made for the millennial generation. If you’re a millennial like myself, you’ll be able to relate to the characters. We all turn 30 and feel like the world is falling on top of us if we’re not where we want to be in our careers or if we’re not married with kids. This show proves that life doesn’t end at 30 in fact, it’s just the beginning.
