Bette Midler’s NYRP Hosts Annual Hulaween Bash At Waldorf Astoria

Bette Midler, the phenomenal actress who played the role of the big sister witch, Winnie in the classic film, Hocus Pocus hosted an incredible Halloween extravaganza on October 29, 2016. She called it a “Hulaween” party.

The theme of this extravaganza was Witches, Wizards and Warlocks Ball at the Haunted Hotel so she turned the famed Waldorf Astoria into an actual “haunted hotel”. She gave this theme the full effect with the bellhops dressed as Zombies and witches on stilts.  She held a costume contest in which Marc Jacobs was one of the judges so all the guests came out dressed with their creative homemade costumes ready to win such as Debbie Harry, Sandra Bernhard, Gloria Steinem, Alan Alda, Sophie von Haselberg, Cheryl Hines and many more. There were other special decorations that created a realistic and believable haunted hotel. The ballroom was decorated like it was a witches’ landing pad so there were legs with colorful stockings on top of all the tables with the effect that the witches experienced crash landings.

The cuisine names and beverage names enhanced the theme and added to the experience like “Love Potion” which was a cocktail and “Graveyard Meatloaf” as an example, also the presentation of the food and beverages such as bubbling chocolate cauldron with was served for desert and the pre-dinner salad served in carved pumpkin created the Hulaween experience. Adding to the Haunted hotel witch theme, Bette Midler topped it off with her costume from Hocus Pocus in which she dressed exactly like Winnie. This ball was thrown as a celebration of the 21st anniversary of the New York Restoration Project of which Bette Midler is the founder. This New York Restoration Project is a non profit organization that believes New Yorkers should always have easy access to beautiful high quality public spaces in the midst of the densely populated urban environment. Some of the work they have accomplished was plant trees, renovate gardens, restore parks, and transform open space for communities throughout New York City’s five boroughs. Over all, this organization has helped to create a healthier environment for New Yorkers in the least green neighborhoods.
