Backstage Beauty Report: Y/PROJECT at Paris Fashion Week

Get the inside scoop on Y/PROJECT’s virginity-inspired look…

Y/PROJECT presented their latest ready-to-wear line at Paris Fashion Week on February 28. We were on the scene with MAC Cosmetics and the beauty team to get the details from makeup artist Carole Colombani herself. She spoke to us about the look’s inspiration, its relation to the collection, and the unique strategies she used to achieve it. The products of choice included the Next to Nothing foundation, the Studio Finish concealer, the colors Spirit of Fall and Ketchup from the Fall ’17 Trend Palette, clear brow set, and brush #159.

Afterward, we stayed for the show to see how the looks came out on the runway. The collection played off of some key themes. Long skirts featured high leg slits, paired with elaborate and shiny straps winding up the girl’s legs. Girls held metallic hand-shaped accessories, huge sheaths of tulle and leather were elaborately wrapped into garments, and lines were youthful, futuristic, and fresh. A highly diverse color palette was sampled, as was a large variety of materials and textures. Messy yet controlled squiggles dominated the outfits and stood out.

Tell us about today’s look.

Carole Colombani: A virgin in every sense. A virgin in everything, on the skin, on the brows. So the whole work is going to be concealing some skin tones, some redness, but adding a bit on the other areas of the face. So basically I just concealed everything with a very light concealer and I worked on the brows even on some girls to recreate brows hair by hair. Not a tattoo, but quite very thin and very light natural pencil, but with a foudre [with a kick]. On the skin I actually flushed them, but from the underneath, like a child flush, with this lip palette that I used as a blush because it’s very organic and bloody in its effect and looks without any makeup on the face. But of course there’s makeup, if not I go home. So yeah to create all these natural textures, skin textures, but not makeupy looking. So basically that’s it. Curling the lashes, a very bit of moisture, and I’m gonna powder some areas on the liner. But with very fine products. It’s more about searching for what can be very transparent in makeup texture and very fresh. So the inspiration is just like freshness from the young teenage and virginity of the world and of everything around you. Naïve.

And is there a new gesture in this look?

Colombani: The new gesture would definitely be to flush from underneath and to not use any blush on the face, but just to have something coming from the bones. Not draping or beautiful fresh flowery, but from the guts. And just concealer for the face, brow gel, that’s it. There’s no mascara, but curling the lashes.
