Antiheroes: ‘The Blacklist’ Stars Famke Janssen and Megan Boone Talk Crossovers

The game of espionage never takes a day off.

It seems that not too long ago, TV was mostly led by male stars. They were brutish, witty, dangerous and masculine. From James Garner in “The Rockford Files” to Homer Simpson in “The Simpsons,” the XY chromosomes seem to always have the upperhand when it comes to narrative, characterization and fandom. And while there are plenty of women in these shows, they seldom give them the opportunity to flourish and gain depth.

But with new female-led TV shows like “Grace & Frankie” and “Girls,” the female perspective is finally receiving the attention it so desperately deserves. And with more action-oriented TV show star’s like “The Blacklist’s” Megan Boone, women are beginning to demonstrate their prowess for being the lead heroine. And with NBC newcomer “The Blacklist: Redemption” hot on their trails, star Famke Janssen shines as the lead in the spin-off series.

Speaking of the intricacies of her character, Janssen said, “Scottie is a big anti-hero. She’ll be likable to some and despicable to others.” The Dutch star went on to say, “like everybody in the world, she’s not one simple thing. She’s complex.” Talking of the show’s possibilities to crossover to the original “The Blacklist” Famke revealed, “It’s possible. We all have contracts that make that possible.”

Talking of the crossovers, Megan Boone stated, “I’m on both shows. I’m sort of the link between both shows. It looks like they’re playing with the idea [of crossing over other characters]. So it always comes down to how essential it is.” Speaking of the amoral characterizations of “The Blacklist” Boone said, “there is no real clear line between good and bad. Liz is always coming from having the best of intentions. What side of the law she lands on is up to chance.” It seems that audiences will continue to keep guessing along the topsy-turvy road that is “The Blacklist” and “The Blacklist: Redemption.”
