Album Review: Murs & 9th Wonder Release ‘Brighter Daze’

Head down, hands jammed in my pockets, I walked down a tundra-esque Fordham Rd listening to Brighter Daze trying to ignore the wind.

As “Lover Murs” came on, I stopped to focus in on the instrumental. The way 9th layers his samples is unreal. I rewound the track as a gust hit me and turning my head I found myself staring at a 9th Wonder tag on the fence.

It’s safe to say that with the borderline religious experience, I’m a fan of this record.

Murs comes through even fresher than on his previous release Have a Good Life. 9th’s instrumentals are top shelf. I feel like whenever 9th cooks up a beat that’s a step above his normal output, he tosses it straight in a folder labeled “For Murs”.

Brighter Daze has everything I could want from a Murs and 9th project. Soulful beats under Murs’s unique rhyming style wrapped around stories of love and life in LA. It’s reminiscent of all their previous collabs without staying too far in the past. At the same time, Murs doesn’t try an appeal to present trends. It’s an honest record with both producer and emcee expressing where they are in their careers, which in both cases means being set in Hip Hop’s timeline as legends. They’re confident in their respective styles and are basically flexing that self assurance all over this record.
