A Dive into Facebook IRL: An Immersive Experience in Soho

I had the pleasure of attending an exclusive media preview for Facebook IRL, a captivating popup experience in Soho, Manhattan. Hosted by Facebook, this event offered a first look into an interactive world designed to bring the best of Facebook to life. The popup opened to the public this past weekend, and is an experience not to be missed.

The event kicked off on May 31 with a preview for Facebook Creators and media. Arriving at the venue around 3:00pm, the atmosphere was buzzing with anticipation. The highlight of the day was an executive keynote delivered by Tom Alison, Head of Facebook, who shared insightful perspectives on the future of Facebook and its growing appeal among young adults. Notably, over 40 million young adults in the US and Canada are daily active users on Facebook, the highest number in three years.

Tom outlined several key initiatives to ensure Facebook’s continued success. These include expanding AI capabilities with upgraded recommendation technologies inspired by GPT architecture, which now deliver 30% of content in Feed—double the amount from two years ago.

Additionally, improvements to video experiences are underway, such as an updated full-screen video player. Video content now accounts for over 60% of time spent on Facebook, with Facebook Reels Watch Time in the U.S. and Canada growing over 80% from Q1’23 to Q1’24.

Post-keynote, the exploration of Facebook IRL began. The Marketplace Photo Studio, curated by the whimsical Tay Beepboop, was a hit. Attendees could take new profile pictures in creatively designed settings, capturing the essence of Facebook’s playful spirit. Customization stations were another major draw, offering on-site airbrushed tote bags, bandanas, and socks—perfect souvenirs for guests to remember the event.

The Facebook Dating Café provided a delightful break with cocktails and light bites, fostering a casual environment to mingle and connect. As guests enjoyed their refreshments, they also had the opportunity to engage with Group admins from notable Facebook communities like Asian Creative Network, Handy Women, and Born Zillenial. Activities such as poster making and vision boarding allowed participants to get creative and envision their future endeavors.

Overall, the Facebook IRL popup is a fantastic blend of innovation, creativity, and community. It offers a unique glimpse into the vibrant world of Facebook, making it a must-visit event in Soho this summer.
