Your Old Droog, without a doubt, embodies the idea of letting one’s ancestors speak through them.
New York’s finest late emcees all find their marks on Droog’s notepad. The ability he has to spit a pure unique line, in the voice of a classic New Yorkian rapper is impressive at the least. While “Hip Hop Head” is a more fun track, less focused on tapping those inner voices, it still comes off as a classic track that many of Droog’s heroes would either pen or bump.
Yes “Hip Hop Head” is a record about Hip Hop chicks giving the best head, but Droog doesn’t see that as a reason to ease up on the bars. When he was on Rosenberg’s Real Late, Droog said that “forty deuce” was a move to a more commercial sound. He may say the same for “Hip Hop Head” and the point I want to make about this is that Droog’s commercial songs pack a harder punch than other emcee’s tracks that are dedicated to flexing. It may be just speaking to the time we live in that Droog can body a beat talking about getting head, while some dudes can’t pop off when they’re flossing their lyrics.
