3D Printing on the Catwalk

The runway has moved away from the two dimensional plane and catwalks into three-dimensional fashion.

Even though 3D printing still requires plenty of work, that hasn’t stopped many designers from seizing the chance to create garments with the technology. The most recent designers to join the few elite that incorporated the technology into their designers are Travis Fitch and threeASFOUR. The designers used Stratasys technology to create two dresses that were presented during New York Fashion Week.

The two dresses, “Pangolin” and “Harmonograph”, are a part of threeASFOUR’s Fall/Winter show, which was presented at Milk studios. The dresses were created with an Objet500 Connex3 3D printer and incorporated Stratasys’ Nano Enhanced Elastomeric Technology material. The designers of the brand, Gabi Asfour, Angela Donhauser and Adi Gil, got their inspiration from natural geometries and were fascinated to see how 3D printed material could mimic morphologies. The designers and their fashion collective have always been known for taking risks and attempting to weave together latest technology with their fashion. Even though the entire collection featured black clothing, the technology used can produce many colors.

The 3D printer used is actually the world’s first multi-color, and multi-material printing technology. Thanks to this technology the material of the dresses could be made from very subtle colors and provided options for the materials’ flexibility and rigidity. The designers went on record to state that the options provided by the technology inspired the designs and the exploration of how the garments could be structured. The entire purpose of the event was not just innovation but to show others that it’s time to reimagine the possibilities of fashion.
