KnockturnaLIST: Ten Wonderful Things About Oh Wonder

10 things we learned during Oh Wonder’s sold out show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg
1. This band will sell out a NYC venue, no matter the capacity.   Back in October, Oh Wonder sold out Rough Trade NYC not once, but twice, on the same day.  On Thursday, they sold out the Music Hall of Williamsburg, a capacity of 550.

2. They’ve already sold out of 6 of their upcoming shows.  In March.

3. Say Yes to the Dress!  If the silver sequined dress that Josephine Vander Gucht wore on Thursday was identified, it would similarly sell out.  It “dazzled.”

4. There will likely be a new record soon … and it will be recorded in Brooklyn.  Oh Wonder loves New York.  They filmed the video Without You in New York.  They’ve shared that New York is their favorite city at their NYC shows and on Facebook).  But this time they followed up that claim by sharing that they will come to Brooklyn for six weeks to write their next record.  Their eponymous album, or “first album,” as Anthony West called it on Monday, has been out since October on Republic Records.

5. If there’s downtime during an Oh Wonder show, the audience will yell.  If there is empty space during an Oh Wonder show, the audience will yell their support, whether be when lights go down in anticipation, the breaks in between songs, or the final sets before an encore.  And it’s not a normal cheer; it’s a collective force of spontaneous, earth shattering, cheers. Get ready.

6. POP ETC is a formidable opener.  The dance-ready pop was a perfect way to rev up for Oh Wonder.

7. The deep bass at the Music Hall of Williamsburg can detract instead of enhance.  The set up at the Music Hall is perfect for the song “Dazzle” with a steady deep pulse that reverbs through the audience.  On other tunes, you lose some of the delicate details you might hear in a smaller venue, such as the piano that starts “Livewire.”  It’s notorious that the bass set up at MHOW is brain shattering (think T-Rex in Jurassic Park).  Lucky for Oh Wonder, their wonderful music still shines through the sound system.

8. Instragramers, Gif-ers, Facebook-ers, and Tweeters rejoice: Music Hall of Williamsburg has Wifi.  It’s powered by American Express, and it’s fast!

9. Oh Wonder wants the best for their fans.  Before sharing a song that they wrote during New Years, Josephine talked about reflections and resolutions.  Things like “Eat more lettuce.  Write a Novel.”  But she countered those goals with this:  “You know what’s best for you.”

10. Oh Wonder is still the best looking duo in pop music.  Seriously.
